CloudNotes: RIP, Google Notebook

  • seanabrady · 11 months ago
I was not expecting this news, nor am I exactly surprised. I also find the note that they will be working on enhancing the Bookmarks offering to be very interesting. I will watch what they do in that space closely. I have decided to move the majority of my Google Notebook information to Gmail or a private Blogger Blog I have. I just cannot get used to Evernote, and I am running Chrome as my primary browser so Zotero is out.

You've said nothing but good things about Zotero--even going so far as to saying it is better than Google Notebook and Evernote. But I've read all your posts and I can't see why you don't use Zotero outside of work. I don't buy the "Keeping work separate from personal," because you can always just create a new notebook, right?

I was an avid Google user, and now I need to switch. I've dabbled in Evernote and OneNote. I like Evernote's search and tagging, I like OneNote's ability to arrange clumps of text on the page (and don't like its search and tagging). You've convinced me to at least try Zotero. But I anxiously await the day you announce once and for all the best notebook application that does it all.

Why don't you use Zotero exclusively?

Zotero does have a couple of limitations. It's not particularly geared toward collaboration (which is a strength at work). And it doesn't have a web-based interface. That's one of the great things about Google Notebook. I keep notes there because I may need them when I'm not near a computer at work or home. To get any real use out of Zotero, you need to have the add-on installed and be on a computer you use regularly. But for these shortcomings, hell yeah, it would be the way to go. And...they're working on it. :)

Hi, this is Joshua Ho. I am one of the co-founders of UberNote. You mentioned you had tried UberNote and it fell short. Do you have any specific feedback that can help us improve.

Thank you for the mention of us on your blog and we hope to make improvements to be a exceptional replacement for Google Notebook.

Josh, my main gripe with Ubernote was that it wasn't as responsive or fast as Google Note, and I much prefer the Google Notebook extension to the Ubernote toolbar. But, obviously, Google Notebook's add-on won't be around anymore, so I may need to give more serious consideration to other options. I should give you guys props for having a ton of features. And checking you out again might give me something to write about here, huh?

I think Google Bookmarks will be integrated with Google Chrome and Android, because with Android most other things are synced to Google except bookmarks so this seems like the way they'll go.

Is there anything we can do as hardcore users of Notebook to try and convince Google to keep the product alive in some form? Not sure what that would look like, but I'd love to see it continue (as many others would as well). I too am fighting for that cause with a blog. I've also got a long list of potential alternatives to Notebook.

Wow, you're taking it much harder than I am. In my view, Notebook wasn't a perfect solution, only the best combination of features I've found. I think there will be better ways to crack the nut of online research and notetaking. In many ways, Evernote is already there. If only they handled text more elegantly. Also, I think Ubernote is about as close to Notebook as you're going to get. They look an awful lot alike.

The problem with evernote is that it is slower and more "clumsy" than google notes
Here was google unique in its fast handling of webclips, including formatting and pictures
I was also in love with the option to share notebooks online with a url. Im gonna miss that.

Do you think there is a chanse there will be notetaking optionality in google bookmarks?
the bookmarks as it looks under the notebook url (notebook/bookmarks)
looks a lot like the notes we are used to

Hi, this is Ryan Damico, co-founder & CEO of WebNotes. I just read your post on Google Notebook alternatives, and would love to hear your thoughts on areas that WebNotes can improve on to become a more suitable research tool for your day-to-day needs. Let me know if you need a Beta invite.

    Thanks!
